Clinical and Statistical Analysis of Childhood Accidents



Abstract
There has been a significant decline of infectious disease in childhood du to an improvement of economy, hygine and medicine. But accidents in childhood are rather increased and considered as major cause of morbidity.
The authors reviewed 1,616 childhood accident cases who visited the emergency room of Chung Ang University hospital from January, 1990 to December 1991,
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) During the 2-years period, the total numbers of childhood accident under 15 years old were 1,616. The most common physical accidents were trauma(83.7%), and the next were burn(5.0%), foreign body (4.7%), biting(2.8%), and posioning (2.3%)
in
order of frequency.
2) Male to female ratio in accidents was 1.7 : 1
3) Accidents were more frequent is summer and autumn. Monthly distribution showed higher prevalence in June and August.
4) The most common time of visting to emergency room was between 12 : 00 and 18 : 00 p.m. (42.2%).
5) majority of cases(77.9%) were carried to emergency room within 3 hours after accident.
6) As for the type of trauma, laceration(93.3%) was followed by contusion and fracture in order of frequency.
7) As for the caurative factors in trauma falldown(35.7%), miscellaneous accident, traffic accident, sports and violence, listed in order of frequency.
8) Among the various vehicles, sedan was the most common cause of traffic accident.
9) As for the injured site, facial injury was the most common and the next were head, arm and leg in order of frequency.
10) As for the burn patients, scaldings(76.5%) were the most common cause, followed by chemical and flame burns in order of frequency.
11) As for the poisoning, CO gas(48.6%) was the most frequent causative substance.
12) As for the foreignbody, the most common cause of factors was coin.
13) the most common cause of bite was dog-bite.
14) Among total 1,616 cases of childhood accidental injury, 158 cases(9.8%) were hospitalized for further care.
